Dan’s Verdict

“The Rail is where the Powerfly conversation ends and a completely different kind of riding begins. 160mm of travel, aggressive mullet geometry, the latest Bosch motor, 800Wh of battery — and right now at £3,825 it’s the best value serious enduro e-bike we’ve ever stocked. If you’ve been on the fence about making the jump, this is the moment.”

— Dan, Owner, All Ride Now · Trek Partner for 15 Years

There is a clear line in Trek’s e-MTB range. Below it: trail bikes, capable machines built for bridleways, mixed-terrain riding, and riders getting into the sport. Above it: the Rail. The Rail is a dedicated enduro e-bike — long-travel, mullet-wheeled, and built specifically for the kind of terrain where your descent lines matter as much as your fitness.

The Gen 5 is the most significant update the Rail has received since its 2019 debut. New frame, 10mm more rear travel (now 160mm front and rear), a lighter and quieter Bosch CX Gen 5 motor, and an 800Wh RIB 2.0 battery across the entire range. The Rail+ 5 is the entry point — and unlike many entry-level bikes, it does not water down the core platform to hit the price. Same frame. Same motor. Same battery. The Rail+ 5 is the Rail.

That pricing makes the Rail+ 5 genuinely compelling compared to anything else at this travel and specification level. At £3,825 you are getting the full Gen 5 Rail platform — the same frame, motor, and battery as the bikes costing thousands more above it in the range. The component differences between the 5 and the 9.7 are real, but they are upgrade-able over time. The frame and motor are not.

What the Gen 5 Actually Changes

The Gen 5 Rail is designed around a mullet wheel setup — 29-inch front, 27.5-inch rear on sizes M through XL. A larger front wheel rolls over trail debris more confidently and holds a line on loose surfaces. The smaller rear wheel pivots faster, helps lower the bottom bracket, and makes the bike more playful in tight, technical sections. This combination has become the standard in modern enduro bikes because it genuinely works better than a traditional matching-wheel setup for this style of riding.

Rear travel has increased by 10mm to 160mm, matching the fork. The Rail+ 5 runs a RockShox Psylo Gold RC fork with DebonAir spring and Isolator RC damper, paired with a RockShox Deluxe Select+ RT rear shock . These are well-specified suspension units for the price point — capable and consistent on the terrain this bike is intended for. The clear upgrade path when you want more is to the Lyrik or ZEB front, and a coil rear — the frame is already set up for it.

ABP keeps the rear wheel tracking the ground under braking. On rocky descents, it’s the single biggest difference between a bike that inspires confidence and one that doesn’t.

Trek’s ABP (Active Braking Pivot) is built into every Rail frame at every price point. It separates braking forces from suspension movement so the rear shock continues to work even when you’re hard on the brakes into a corner. On technical, rooty descents — exactly what you find on the steeper South Downs bridleways and trail centres across the South East — this keeps the rear wheel tracking rather than skipping. It is not marketing language. It makes a measurable difference.

A flip-chip at the lower shock mount changes suspension progression from 19% to 24%. The more progressive setting suits coil shock conversions and harder, more aggressive use. Adjustable angle headset cups (sold separately) allow you to slacken the head angle down to 63.5° for even more gravity-oriented geometry. The Gen 5 Rail is one of the most adjustable e-MTBs on the market at this price.

The Bosch CX Gen 5 Motor

Every Rail+ Gen 5, regardless of spec level, runs the latest Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 motor. Out of the box: 85Nm torque, 600W peak power. Through the Bosch eBike Flow app , you can unlock 100Nm and 750W — placing it among the most powerful motor systems available on any e-MTB. The Gen 5 is noticeably quieter than its predecessor, which matters on the trail, and it is physically lighter too, which helps the overall weight distribution.

The new eMTB+ mode is worth understanding. Standard eMTB mode reads your pedal input and modulates assist smoothly — it is the best all-day riding mode. eMTB+ is more aggressive: it responds faster and harder, which is what you want on a steep, punchy climb where you need torque immediately. The two modes give you genuine range across the kind of riding the Rail is built for.

The 800Wh PowerTube RIB 2.0 battery is removable without tools and compatible with the Bosch PowerMore range extender. For a full day of enduro-style riding — multiple runs, long climbs, mixed terrain — 800Wh is enough that range anxiety simply does not feature. If you do want more, the PowerMore adds 250Wh for epic mountain days.

Is the Rail+ 5 Right for You?

The Rail sits above the Powerfly FS+ in Trek’s range and below the Slash+. Getting this right matters — it’s a significant step up in both capability and price.

Right for you if…
  • You want a dedicated enduro e-MTB with proper long-travel suspension
  • You are moving up from a trail e-bike and want genuine capability
  • You ride technical terrain regularly — steep, rocky, rooty descents
  • You want the full Gen 5 Rail platform at the most accessible price
  • You want to ride all day — 800Wh means range is not a concern
  • You want a bike that grows with you as your riding progresses
Look elsewhere if you want…
  • Carbon frame — step up to the Rail+ 9.7 or above
  • FOX suspension from the factory — starts at Rail+ 9.7
  • Wireless SRAM shifting — available from the Rail+ 8
  • A lighter weight e-MTB — consider the Trek Slash+ with TQ motor
  • Trail or XC riding — the Powerfly FS+ is better suited

The Honest Take

The question we hear most about the Rail+ 5 is whether to stretch the budget to the Rail+ 8. The 8 adds a RockShox ZEB Select fork, a Super Deluxe Select+ shock, Shimano XT brakes, and SLX drivetrain for £5,000. Those are meaningful upgrades, particularly the brakes and fork, if you plan to ride hard and regularly.

But at £3,825 the Rail+ 5 is a remarkable piece of value. The frame, motor, and battery are identical to the £12,000 flagship. The Psylo Gold RC fork is a genuinely capable suspension unit — not the compromise it might appear on paper. And Shimano Deore 12-speed is reliable, easy to maintain, and shifts cleanly. For most riders coming to enduro e-MTB for the first time, the Rail+ 5 will take them much further than they expect before they feel the need to upgrade anything.

At £3,825, the Rail+ 5 Gen 5 is quite possibly the best value serious enduro e-MTB available in the UK right now.

One note on sizing: the Gen 5 geometry has a large jump in reach between M (450mm) and L (490mm). If you sit between the two, it is worth coming in to try both before committing. Our team can advise and we always recommend a proper fitting conversation before any purchase at this level. That’s what we are here for.
