TREK CHARTER+ BUYER GUIDE UK (2026) | CHARTER+ 4 VS CHARTER+ 4 TRAIL VS CHARTER+ 5 COMPARISON
Understanding Trek's electric hybrid range and choosing the right Charter+ for your riding.
The Trek Charter+ range is Trek's premium electric hybrid family — built for riders who want genuine all-day range, real-world capability, and the option to take things off the beaten track. Whether you're commuting, exploring trails, or doing both, the Charter+ lineup has more variation than it first appears. This guide walks you through every model, the key decisions, and helps you find the right one for how you actually ride.

The biggest decision isn't which spec level to choose — it's which Charter+ platform suits how you actually ride.
Charter+ 4 R9 vs Charter+ 4 Trail vs Charter+ 5 R10
Charter+ bikes are built for riders who want more than a commuter — proper all-day range, a motor that actually helps, and a bike that works on more than just tarmac. Every model in the range uses Bosch's Performance Line motor and connects to the eBike Flow app, so you're getting the same core system across the board.
Where they differ is terrain, fit and motor. The R9 and Trail both use the Bosch Performance Line Sport motor with 75Nm of torque — the difference between them is geometry, not power. The Charter+ 5 steps up to the Bosch Performance Line PX motor with 90Nm, which gives noticeably more punch on climbs and when the bike is loaded. Frame choice — stepover or lowstep — is available across the R9 and Trail; the Charter+ 5 is lowstep only.
Trek Charter+ 4 R9
Best for: Riders who want a fast, efficient electric hybrid for everyday riding and longer road or path adventures.
Ride feel: Upright and comfortable from the off — the high front end puts you in a relaxed position where you can actually see what's going on around you. The front suspension, suspension seatpost and wide 27.5" tyres deal with road imperfections without you noticing. The adjustable stem means you can dial the position in without needing a bike fit.
Charter+ 4 Trail
Best for: Riders who want the same accessible price point but with the confidence to head off-road and onto rougher tracks.
Ride feel: Identical riding position and comfort to the R9 — same upright geometry, same suspension seatpost, same wide tyres. The Trail variant doesn't change how the bike feels day to day, it changes what you can do with it. Same adjustable stem for fit, same relaxed back position. Worth knowing if easy mounting matters — the Trail also comes in lowstep.
Charter+ 5 R10
Best for: Riders who want a premium spec level, lowstep accessibility, and the option of a bigger battery for serious range.
Ride feel: Same comfortable upright geometry as the rest of the Charter+ family, but the Charter+ 5 is lowstep only — so if easy on and off is a priority, this is the one. Higher spec components throughout, and available with the 800Wh battery as standard for riders who want serious range without thinking about it.
If you're mainly on roads and paths, the Charter+ 4 R9 does everything you need. If you want the option to go off-road without spending more, the Charter+ 4 Trail is the same money with more capability. If you want the best spec and easy mounting, the Charter+ 5 is the one to look at — just bear in mind it's lowstep only.
Start With How You Ride
Most riders choose their Charter+ based on where they ride and how important easy mounting and dismounting is to them.
The key decision is whether you want a road and path focused bike, trail capability, or premium spec with lowstep convenience.
Do you have any physical reasons that make getting on and off a standard bike difficult?
If you have hip, knee or back issues, or you just find swinging a leg over a high frame uncomfortable, a lowstep makes a real difference on every single ride — not just occasionally.
The Charter+ 4 R9 and Trail both come in lowstep and stepover. The Charter+ 5 is lowstep only, so if that's the frame you need, it makes the decision easier.
→ If easy mounting matters, go lowstep. If not, the stepover gives a slightly more traditional feel and both are available across the range.
Where do you actually ride — and be honest about it?
Most people think they'll go off-road more than they do. If your rides are mostly roads, cycle paths and the occasional gravel track, the Charter+ 4 R9 handles all of that comfortably.
But if woodland tracks, bridleways or rougher trails are a regular part of your riding — not just once in a while — the Charter+ 4 Trail is built for that and costs the same.
→ Honest answer: if you'll do it more than occasionally, get the Trail. If it's rare, the R9 won't hold you back.
How far do you want to go, and how often do you want to think about charging?
The 540Wh battery gives you solid range for most day-to-day riding. But if you're planning longer days out, loaded with panniers, or you just don't want range to be something you think about — the 800Wh is worth it.
The Charter+ 5 also steps up the component spec with a Shimano 10-speed drivetrain and a higher quality finish throughout — so if you want the best of the range, this is it.
→ If range and spec matter and lowstep works for you, the Charter+ 5 R10 800Wh is the one to go for.

The Charter+ 5 is the premium option — better components, lowstep only, and the battery choice to match serious ambitions.
Key Points
- Bosch Performance Line PX motor — 90Nm torque
- 10-speed Shimano CUES drivetrain
- Hydraulic disc brakes
- 800Wh battery — up to 68 miles range
Who it suits
The Charter+ 5 suits riders who want the most powerful motor in the range, the best components, and the convenience of a lowstep frame. If range and power matter and you don't want to think about either, this is the one.
Is the Charter+ 4 Trail the lowstep e-MTB the market has been missing?
One of the most common questions we get asked in the shop is whether there's a lowstep electric bike that can actually handle trail riding. For a long time the honest answer was no — lowstep frames were city bikes, and trail bikes were stepover only. The Charter+ 4 Trail changes that.
It sits in an interesting gap in the market — not quite a full e-MTB, but a long way from a city bike. Think of it as MTB-lite with all the comfort features you'd expect from a hybrid: suspension seatpost, upright geometry, integrated lights, mudguards and rack as standard. The difference is it'll handle terrain that would stop most hybrid bikes in their tracks.
Power that keeps up with the trails
The Charter+ 4 Trail uses the Bosch Performance Line Sport motor with 75Nm of torque — that's serious power for a hybrid-category bike. On trail it means you're not getting dropped on climbs, you're not struggling on loose surfaces, and you're not having to work harder than the terrain demands. Most dedicated e-MTBs are running motors in the 85-100Nm range, so the gap is smaller than you'd think — and the Charter+ Trail makes up for it with a far more comfortable and practical overall package.
High power and lowstep — a rare combination
Lowstep frames and serious motor power don't usually come together. The assumption in the industry has been that lowstep means city riding, and city riding doesn't need a powerful motor. Trek have challenged that with the Charter+ Trail — the lowstep version has exactly the same motor, battery options and trail geometry as the stepover. So if you have any physical reason that makes mounting a high frame difficult, you're not being asked to compromise on capability to get around it.
What it's not — and why that matters
The Charter+ 4 Trail isn't a full e-MTB. It doesn't have the suspension travel of a Rail+ or Powerfly, it's not designed for aggressive descents or technical singletrack. What it is designed for is everything in between — the kind of riding most people actually do. Bridleways, gravel tracks, light woodland paths, canal towpaths that turn rough. If that's your world, this bike was built for it. If you're regularly hitting technical descents or riding demanding trail centres, the Rail+ or Powerfly range is worth a look instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Trek Charter+ be used on Cycle to Work scheme?
Yes — all Charter+ models are eligible for Cycle to Work schemes including Cyclescheme, Green Commute Initiative and Bike2Work. We're registered with all three at All Ride Now. The 540Wh models start at £3,225 which falls within most scheme limits, and the higher value models can be split or funded through GCI which has no upper limit. Worth doing the sums — the tax saving on a £3,225 bike can be significant.
How long does it take to charge a Trek Charter+ battery?
The 540Wh battery charges to full in around 4.9 hours from empty. The 800Wh battery takes approximately 6.9 hours. The battery is removable and top-eject with an integrated carry handle, so you can charge it off the bike at home or in the office without needing to bring the whole bike inside.
Does the Trek Charter+ have automatic gears?
The Charter+ 5 R10 has the option of Shimano's AUTOMATiQ system which automatically shifts gears based on your speed, cadence and terrain — so you never have to think about changing gear. The Charter+ 4 R9 and Trail use a standard 9-speed Shimano CUES drivetrain with manual shifting. For riders who want the simplest possible riding experience, the Charter+ 5 with AUTOMATiQ is worth the step up.
What accessories fit the Trek Charter+ rear rack?
The Charter+ comes with a MIK HD rear rack rated to 60lbs — that's a significant load capacity. It's compatible with the full MIK accessory range including pannier bags, side bags and child seats. If you're planning to use the bike for shopping, commuting with kit, or carrying a child, the rack system is genuinely capable straight out of the box with no extra parts needed.
Can the Trek Charter+ battery be locked to prevent theft?
Yes — the Bosch battery can be locked into the frame via the Bosch eBike Flow app, which also provides theft alerts if the bike is moved without your knowledge. The app connects via Bluetooth and gives you digital locking, custom ride modes and navigation as well. It's one of the more practical security features on any electric bike in this price range.
