The Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3 2027 is the standout hardtail in its price bracket — an air-sprung RockShox fork and a dropper post are both things you'd normally expect to pay considerably more for. Aluminium frame, SRAM SX/NX Eagle 12-speed, Maxxis Rekon tyres.

WHO THIS BIKE SUITS

You're new to mountain biking and want a bike that won't hold you back as your skills grow.

You want an air fork and dropper post — both genuine upgrades over what most bikes at this price offer — without paying for a full trail bike.

You want a dependable 12-speed drivetrain with a wide range for climbing, not a cut-down 2x setup.

You're after a do-it-all bike — trail centres at the weekend, commuting during the week.

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT

If you don't need the air fork specifically, the Marlin 6 gives you the same dropper post and 29" wheels with a coil-sprung fork instead, for less.

If you're already riding regularly and want more travel and a more capable spec, look at the Procaliber or Top Fuel ranges instead — the Marlin is built as an entry point, not a long-term upgrade platform.

WHERE IT SITS IN THE RANGE

The Marlin 7 sits at the top of Trek's Marlin hardtail range, below the Procaliber's race-focused build. Within the Marlin family itself, the 7 is the model that adds the air-sprung fork the 6 doesn't have — the dropper post and 29" wheels are shared with the 6, the air fork and SRAM 1x12 Eagle drivetrain are the 7's own step up.

HOW IT RIDES

Fork and geometry

The RockShox Judy Silver air fork is the headline feature at this price — noticeably more supple and easier to tune to your weight than the coil-sprung forks most budget hardtails still ship with. Trek's current Marlin geometry keeps things stable and confidence-inspiring on descents while staying efficient enough for climbing, without feeling twitchy for a first-time rider.

Dropper post

A dropper post at this price point is genuinely uncommon — it makes a real difference on technical descents, letting you get the saddle out of the way without stopping to adjust it manually.

Drivetrain

SRAM's SX/NX Eagle 12-speed setup gives a proper wide-range cassette (11-50T) — you get a genuinely easy gear for steep climbs, which matters more than outright top speed for most trail riding.

THE FINAL WORD

The Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3 2027 is the hardtail we'd point most first-time mountain bikers towards — it gets the fork and dropper post right, which is exactly where cheaper bikes cut corners. Come in and we'll get you set up on the right size and talk through whether the Marlin range is the right starting point for how you plan to ride.
